Your PD (pupil distance) measurement

PD (pupil, or pupillary, distance) measures the space between the pupils of your eyes. Knowing this measurement is important to make sure your eyes match up with the optical centre of your lenses.

Although you may not see your PD measurement on your prescription, it will most likely have been recorded at the time of your eye exam. Contact the optometrist who issued your prescription and request your PD. If for some reason this is not available, see our guide here.

How long will my glasses take to be ready?

Depends on what you need! Simple prescriptions we can generally do the same day as long as we have the lenses in stock! More complicated stuff such as progressives take 1-2 weeks depending on complexity. Also allow time for shipping as required.

When will my online order be ready?

The delivery times vary for different items:

Like you, we prefer things to be simple. If your frame breaks within the first ten years of its life, we'll replace it. You can come into any store or post it directly to us. You'll only need to cover the postage cost of us sending the replacement (if required).

We'll replace it with the exact colour or the closest alternative if that's not available.

If you can’t send us the part, instead send us a photo. This is so we can learn what went wrong and keep improving the way we make our frames. We’re the manufacturers, after all, so the buck stops with us.

Progressive lenses can be tricky to adjust to, particularly for your first pair. If you don't feel comfortable with your progressives, you can request we remake the lenses in the first 90 days.

Contact Lens Return Policy:

We accept returns for contact lenses provided their boxes are sealed, unopened, unmarked, and unused. Contact lenses may be returned within 30 days of delivery.

How to Initiate a Return or Exchange:

2. Provide your order details and reason for return.

3. Once approved, you will receive instructions on how to return the item.

Return Shipping:

Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer unless the return is due to a manufacturing defect or error on our part.

Refunds:

Refunds will be issued to the original form of payment within 5 business days upon receiving the returned item.

Exchanges:

If you wish to exchange your item for a different colour, style, or size, please indicate your preference when initiating the return process. Exchanges are subject to availability.

Damaged or Defective Items:

Health fund rebates

Children and youth 19 years old or younger are eligible for the following OHIP covered services:

1 major eye exam (for vision and general eye health) every 12 months
any minor assessments needed

If you are 20 years old or older, and you have an eligible medical condition affecting your eyes, OHIP will cover:

1 major eye exam for you once every 12 months
2 additional follow-up minor assessments

Eligible medical conditions are:

diabetes mellitus
glaucoma requiring or having had treatment with medication, laser (excluding prophylactic laser peripheral iridotomy), or surgery
cataracts / posterior capsular opacification with a visual acuity of 20/40 or worse in the best corrected eye, or when a surgery referral is made
retinal disease that is acute, or is chronically progressive
corneal disease that is acute, or is chronically progressive
uveitis that is acute or chronic during episodes of active inflammation
optic pathway disease that is acute, or is chronically progressive
acquired cranial nerve palsy resulting in strabismus during the acute phase or until the condition resolves or stabilizes
ocular drug toxicity screening for patients taking hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine, ethambutol or tamoxifen

If you are 65 years and older and you do not have an eligible medical condition affecting your eyes, OHIP will cover:

1 major eye exam for you once every 18 months and 2 additional follow-up minor assessments.

You may be eligible for additional eye care if you are on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or Ontario Works.

Can you make glasses using my existing prescription?

Absolutely! If you’ve had an eye test recently (within the past 2 years), you can enter these details when ordering your glasses online - or bring along a digital or printed copy to one of our stores. If you don’t already have it, you can ask the optometrist who did the test to send it to you, or us. If you think your vision has changed, or you think you’d benefit from an examination, you can book in at one of our locations for an eye test.

Can you make glasses using any prescription?

Pretty much. We can make almost any type of lens or glasses type. Your prescription must be valid, and some lens types are available in-store only. Just call or email us if you think you have something unusual, or need clarification.

Why I cannot see my prescriptions online?

Please note that prescriptions older than 2 years are not displayed on our website. If you need assistance with older prescriptions, please contact our contact center team for further help.

Can I enter in a prescription not from Dresden?

Accepted Answer

Of course, it’s your prescription record so feel free to add in a prescription you already have, no more keeping things on bits of paper. You can enter the prescription as you order glasses and if you are logged in, we’ll save it.

What happens if I’m too short-sighted to read my prescription off a piece of paper?

Can I have more than one prescription?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it’s more about what you need the glasses for. So whilst some parameters will not change others can be modified to make a pair of glasses do what you need. This is part of the skill of an Optometrist. As an example, you may be getting sick of being told off by attendants at museums and art galleries because you step over the rope to read the little plaques next to exhibits. You could have a prescription with a focal length that helps you read at a certain distance. An optometrist might call this an ‘intermediate add’. Bit by bit we’re trying to demystify your prescription to make it more useful for you.
You may also have one prescription for contacts and another for glasses.

You can book eye exams and contact lens consultations with our highly qualified, experienced optometrists by just clicking on this link. Appointment times are 30 to 45 minutes.

A comprehensive consultation includes a detailed discussion of your past history and current visual needs, a tailored prescription, intraocular pressures, ocular health, disease diagnosis and management, as well as any referral to other medical specialties as required.

If you’re under 20 or over 65 and hold a valid OHIP card, there’s no out of pocket costs. If you’re covered by your work or spouse’s insurance, we can submit the claim on your behalf.

Can I order contacts with my glasses prescription?

Accepted Answer

You cannot order contacts with just a glasses prescription alone! Your contact lens prescription is almost always different from your glasses prescription. If you would like to start a contact lens profile with us to order contacts, we need a valid contact lens prescription (within one year). Question 18

What should I expect from my contact lens fitting appointment?

If this is your first time trying contacts, please prepare to spend a significant amount of time learning to insert and remove your lenses safely, as well as how to care for them. Don't get discouraged if you find it difficult (as many patients do at first!), we will block off extra time for this learning process.

Do not expect to leave right away with your contact prescription! It is often the case we will have to order you specific trial lenses for your needs (no extra charge). It is also likely that you will require a complementary follow-up visit with our doctor to check the fit of the lenses as well as your visual acuity after you have had a chance to wear them for a couple days. Once this process is finalized, the doctor will be happy to sign off on your contact lens prescription.

Caring for your Dresdens

Dresden frame

Your Dresden frame is made from an ultra-durable nylon. It’ll give you many years of service if you give it a little care.

Don’t use methylated spirits or any alcohol based products to clean your frames. It will crack the frame like kryptonite.
Wash your frames occasionally to remove oils and grit. If you wear them in a very hot and gritty environment, use a toothbrush and dish soap to clean the groove between the frame and lens - but not your lenses!
Check the pin in the hinge every so often. The top of it should sit flush with the arm. Press it firmly in with your finger if it’s not flush.
Bring the frame back to us if the pin/hinge gets loose and we’ll sort out a better fit.
If you feel your frame could fit better, pop in to us and we’ll adjust it for you. No worries.

Lenses

You will see your best when your precision lenses are clean. So to get the best vision, clean your lenses daily (or more often if you’re in a hot or dusty environment). Here’s how:

Rinse the lenses under cold water to wash away grit and dust.
Apply lens cleaner solution or liquid detergent to both surfaces of the lenses.
Gently rub the lens with your fingertips or a clean lens cloth to remove oils, smudges and fingerprints.
Rinse under cold water.
Polish with a lens cloth or soft, lint-free tissue.

Question 20

Progressives: getting used to them

Progressive lenses are the bee’s knees! You can see clearly everywhere from far away to near, whether you’re driving or threading a needle. A few things to know about how to use and get used to progressives:

1. Adjusting can take a little time

Often it takes a little time for your eyes to adjust to your new progressives. At the beginning, things can look blurry or less clear than before. Once you learn to move your eyes up and down the lens, you’ll start to find lens areas with the best optical power. Most people take one or two weeks to adjust to new progressive glasses, some a little longer.

It’s OK to switch back to your old pair of glasses for a short time if you feel uncomfortable during the first few days. But persisting with your new pair is the best way to get used to your new progressives.

2. Move your head to see better

Your vision will be the clearest when you directly face an object. This is because the clearest part of the lens is positioned in the middle of the lens, right in front of your pupil. Within a few days, you will learn to look through the middle of the lens naturally, and objects will come into focus quickly and easily.

You need to move your head when you use progressives. Use your nose as your pointer to look directly at the object and then move your chin up and down until the object comes into focus. This will bring the correct optical power directly in front of your eyes to give you the clearest vision. Remember, the top half of the lens has the distance power and the bottom half has the reading power.

3. Things you’ll get used to

Some people notice vertical lines (such as doors) in their side vision bend a little when they rapidly move their head from left to right. This is an adaptation effect. You’ll get used to this in a week or so.

For some, the ground or stairs are out of focus when wearing progressives for the first time. This is because, as you look down, your eyes look through the bottom part of the lens, which is designed for close-up vision. Simply lower your chin until the ground comes into focus.

Some people find progressive lenses difficult to use when reading in bed. This is because the lenses are designed to use in a sitting position. Try to sit upright with a pillow behind your back.

Picking between our amazing colours can be hard! Luckily because our frames are standardized, it is no issue to change your colour at time of pick up if you change your mind. Just keep in mind that you will not be able to change the size or shape of the frame once lenses are cut.
